Assistant Principal's Message: Something is in the air - are you feeling it too?
Parents & Guardians,
I am excited to be able to deliver our principal message this week! To be honest, I wanted to do a video for you, however today I was inundated with discipline issues. Something is in the air - are you feeling it too?
I want to share with you a few things surrounding the discipline process here at KMS. Think of this process as putting together a "puzzle"; we need all of the pieces of the puzzle to have a solution and to finalize what our picture is. The below information is a general picture of the process:
- Verbal, written, or STAR Report is made to administration from teacher, student or parent to start the puzzle making process with the 'edges' of the puzzle.
- Administration reviews the information provided and then if needed, follows up with the person making the statement to help ensure we have parts of our puzzle pieces ready to set in place.
- Administration meets with all parties listed as a witnesses and offenders, adding more puzzle pieces. Sometimes during this part of the puzzle making we realize the best solution is using other school resources like our counselors.
- ALL parties write their own statement, this is due process and helps us ensure we have the right information should we need to contact higher authorities. These are the specific pieces of the puzzle that allow us to have "ah ha" moments. This process (steps 3 & 4) can take up to several days depending on the severity of the incident.
- After all statements and follow-up discussions have been completed, administration uses the DODEA AI 1347.01 "Student Disciplinary Rules and Procedures" to work through a few examples: is the conduct is prohibited?; is there is a history of conduct within KMS?; do we need more support from "law enforcement" or lawyers?" and much more. These puzzle pieces are the middle pieces of the puzzle, we are starting to see the final picture.
- Administration reaches out to parents/guardians to meet or talk over the phone regarding the issue/concerns.
- Consequences are discussed with parents and offender(s) and a plan is made to support all parties moving forward at KMS, this finalizes the puzzle for us.
Again, this is a general picture of the "puzzle making process" for KMS, as you can imagine there are so MANY variables that come into play. With your support, we can find the best path forward for everyone.
A few fun things to think about:
- Come join your student for lunch sometime, we love to see our parents here eating with their student.
- Walk-In Conferences are November 1st 0800-1045 (Pre-scheduled conferences 1200-1500)
- Reach out to teachers if you have concerns, they are always ready to support you.
- Take a moment to celebrate the little things with your students, they need to hear it.
- Did you hear our podcast this week? It's a funny one, with a little serious too! (HERE)
